DTI warns “3 for 100″ christmas lights maybe substandard
Christmas is fast approaching once again and as every Filipino home prepares for it, christmas lights is obviously on top of the list. Everyone is on the rush to shop for cheap decorations for their homes. An assortment of christmas lights, “parol” (Christmas Lantern) and christmas trees now fill the stores and even small stalls along Divisoria.
Cheap Christmas lights bought at “3 for 100″ (three christmas lights for 100 pesos) usually made in China is enticing because it is so cheap and more than enough to enliven most Filipino homes during the season. Filipinos love the flicker and the varied colors, to some christmas trees made of christmas lights is even better than hanging them around the house or on some of the trees outside.
Worried about fires, Angel Pelayo, Department of Trade and Industries assistant secretary said “Such lights may be substandard and may be prone to overheating and start fires. Such commodities are usually made of thin wires that may overheat quickly, especially if left on overnigh.”
She’s correct about this thing. It’s time to get rid of the 3 for 100 mentality and start considering quality over quantity. We will only realize the value of buying products passing the quality standards when everything is gone over these cheap lights.

Fossil Fuel Depletion Implications & Solutions
To address climate change and depletion in fossil fuel reserves, it is critical to move towards independence of cities from oil, coal, gas and nuclear power to ensure a sustainable future. Increasing energy efficiency, combined heat and power, wind power, solar energy, bio-fuel, solar hydrogen and other energy storage systems promise a secure and sustainable development future. Yet the introduction of these technologies is still far too slow to meet the massive challenge ahead. This provides enormous challenges to the scientific community.

Mining in general is beneficial, because technology would not prosper without it. Let us just see what mining can do to us. We have sturdy buildings due to construction materials derived from mines. We have electronic gadgets that rely on silicon for its parts, like cellular phones, radios, computers etc… Jewelries that came from gold and diamond mines. Aircrafts and gigantic water vessels are all made from materials that came from mines. We enjoy life as we know it today because of mining.
But to most environmentalists, mining is generally considered as a threat to the the environment. A ticking bomb ready to explode at the right time. It is a brewing disaster and nobody likes the consequences of mining activities. Without proper Environmental Management Systems employed, the miners and the locals’ lives are in danger.
